Other Akron capital projects
Other projects in Akron’s proposed capital budget include:
• Debt service on general obligation debt for capital projects. Cost: $31 million in Akron funds.
• Repairing deteriorated concrete and sealing concrete joints in the city’s skateboard park. An Akron father and his son led a community effort last summer to make improvements to the park; Mayor Don Plusquellic pledged help from the city. Cost: $20,000 in Akron funds.
• Resurfacing Brittain Road from Evans to Tallmadge avenues. Cost: $172,000 in Akron and state funds.
• Replacing the North Street Bridge. Cost: $1.5 million in state, Summit County and Akron funds.
• Replacing the Swinehart Avenue Bridge over the Mud Run ditch. Cost: $650,000 in state, Barberton and Akron funds.
• Improvements to Boss Park, Grace Park and Mason Park in the University Park Alliance area. Cost: $315,000 from multiple government agencies.
• Reconfiguration of the 911 call center. Cost: $1.2 million in Akron and Summit County funds.
• Improvements to Balch Street Community Center, which received negative publicity last fall for deteriorating condition. Could include replacing men’s and women’s locker rooms and the gymnasium and auditorium roofs and refurbishing the auditorium for theater productions. Cost: $50,000 in Akron funds.
• Slope stabilization around the detention pond at the Ghent Road Office Park. Cost: $3.3 million in private and state funds.
• Construction of a new grocery store in Highland Square. Cost: $3.7 million in local and private funds and a federal loan for which Akron may apply.
